Get Over on Vegas with these selections October 12, 2007

With a lot of my focus on fantasy college football, I occasionally find what I think to be some total bets that scream at me. For Week 7, there are two games that vastly overestimate the defensive aptitude of the combatants:
OVER 55 SMU at Southern Miss
both of these teams have defenses that rank lower than 105 in my system – bad enough. But QB Paul Smith leads Tulsa offense that can rack up points in a hurry, and Golden Eagles have a strong rushing attack to lean on with injured starting QB Jeremy Young in the shop.
Over 62.5 UL-Monroe at North Texas
Another horrible defensive matchup. The Mean Green are worst in two of my favorite categories and 118th in the third – they allow 51 ppg alone! If for no other reason, see the Sun Belt’s best RB in Warhawk Calvin Dawson.

The Volunteer defense ranks 109th in my ratings, and the Bulldogs have some impressive results this year. Despite playing with a far-below average quarterback position, Sylvester Croom has a tremendous defense and one of the best young RBs in the nation in Anthony Dixon. Look under the hood and even Jeff Sagarin’s computer rankings see a potential Top Ten team in Starkville (see ELO-CHESS description and ranking in red).
I have seen +240 and +250 straight up, and that is really enticing, especially if you play both the moneyline and take the points.
Never bet more than 10% of your capital on one game – this looks like a 5-8% bet to me.
