Geoff OgilvyIf there is one thing I enjoy as much as watching college football, it is watching golf on a lazy Sunday. Occasionally I attempt to enhance the viewing pleasure with a trip to a Sportsbook and bet on said action, and this week I see an great chance to get down on Geoff Ogilvy’s Sunday performance.

Ogilvy has taken his spot among the golfing elite in the last two years (elite is one step below Tiger, a category of one), and today you should be able to get the lanky Aussie at -135 over Stewart Cink +105.

Granted, Cink is as hot as McDonald’s coffee with a blistering 65 yesterday and a win at Harbour Town last week, but do not be tempted by the chance to play Cink at better than even money.

Support for my position? A little mean reversion as Cink’s scores have been all over the place (73-70-65) this weekend in Charlotte yet Ogilvy has been a steady 70-70-69. I also think Ogilvy has extra motivation making up for three missed cuts (MC) to start the campaign, and he has gotten back on track with a win at the World Match play and a T2 at the Houston Shell.

Most people familiar with betting see golf bets as odds to win the tourney, but a much less risky way to bet the game are the matchups. Rather than picking one player to beat THE ENTIRE FIELD, matchups allow you to focus on your player over another.

One of the weaknesses of matchups is that you may not be able to get action on every player – today there are no positions to take on Anthony Kim, the next big youngster to hit the Tour who currently is leading the Wachovia. Kim will be the next big thing, but until that dawns upon the rest of the golf betting public your only way to support him is with pre-tourney odds-to-win bets.

This was painful to watch as both players gave up a lot of money on Sunday – Cink edged Ogilvy 74-76. Yeech!

Zen question – would I feel better if Cink would have won by 10? Probably not.

Golf is the fourth most popular sport in the world and everyone can play. The only thing that gets in the way of great golf is the mind.Real golfers know that golf is not just a sport, but it is a way of living. They say golf is like life, but don’t believe them.
